As the second day of racing at the Mapfre Middle Sea 19th Euromed Regatta, organised by the Malta Young Sailors Club progressed today in Mellieha, places on the leaderboard started to change.  In day two of the international regatta, three races were held in excellent weather conditions, with slightly stronger winds than yesterday.

Optimist (Open and Cadet)

Malta’s Richard Schultheis dominated the 121 strong fleet when he won all three races and climbed to first place. Hungaraian Soma Kis-Szölgyémi, slipped to second place whilst Swiss Boris Hirsch climbed to third place.

Optimist (Novice)

Malta’s placing on the podium today was made possible through the efforts of Royal Malta Yacht Club’s Vanja Ramm-Ericcson who maintained her third placing. First and Second placed were Vito Božovic and Oliver Bilic, both Croatian sailors representing JK Horizont Porec.

In the Laser Classes a number of protests have been lodged meaning that there might be some changes to the results of the day. Protests are expected to be heard later on this evening, Thursday 20th December.

Laser 4.7

The eighteen strong fleet, saw the same three sailors in the first three places, though placings were changed. Malta’s Saul Vassallo slipped to third place. Leading the pack is Ukrainian Andrey Verdysh followed by Irish Alana Coakly.

Laser Standard

Sailcoach’s Upamanyu Dutta (India) and Jacob Jacob Kjellsson (Sweden) pipped Karl Miggiani to push him down to third place on the Class’ classification.

Laser Radial

The top three sailors for this class remained the same as those from the first day of racing, however placings were changed between Nethra Kumanan and Zachary Zammit – the latter having to relinquish his top placing to Kumanan.

Racing will resume tomorrow, Friday 21st December at 10:00am when, depending on weather conditions, three races are scheduled to take place. There are two separate race areas in Mellieħa Bay for Laser and Optimist Classes.

Races are being held under the direction of Race Officers Peter Dimech (Optimist Class) and Roula Galani from Turkey (Laser Class).

The 19th edition of the Euromed Regatta is sponsored by Mapfre Middlesea and supported by Yachting Malta.
